Statement from Environment Agency on Damaged Flood Defences

"Statement on Repairs to damaged Flood defences Tallington, from the Environment Agency 15th Match 2021.

Following the flood event at Tallington during the Christmas period the Agency mobilised its Recovery Team to repair the damaged flood defences upstream of Tallington. This involved the breaking up, consolidating and rebuilding of just over 700 metres of flood bank. It included the closing down of a number of badger setts and repairing areas of rabbit damage.  We worked closely with Natural England for these works as badgers are a protected species. An artificial sett is being built as part of the works that should hopefully re-house the local population. The newly re-built bank is presently being reinforced with steel mesh, prior to topsoiling to prevent future excavation by burrowing animals. Once all works are completed we will review the annual maintenance for this flood bank. It is also our intention to reinstate/renew the outfall from the ditch nearest the bridge/field into the Maxey Cut to provide a gravity outfall for any water that collects there. Following all this work, the defence will be of an improved standard and to continue to provide flood protection for Tallington."
